a different kind of work out It's the latest craze in commercial fitness centers, and even without the fancy equipment and frills offered by bigger name facilities, women are flocking in droves to the Curves gym in Upper Marlboro. For a tightly structured 30 minutes, the women work their way through a fast paced circuit of hydraulic resistance fitness equipment, changing stations every 30 seconds. After a five minute cooling down routine, the ladies are out the door. There are no aerobics classes, fruit drinks or even showers, but that doesn't seem to bother the growing number of clients. "A friend of mine said she lost a lot of weight in inches so I tried it and liked it, said Beverly Bergmann, an Upper Marlboro resident who has been a regular ever since. Ranked second among Entrepreneur magazine's top 10 franchises this year, the Curves concept appeals to women at several different levels. For one, there is the time element. With many having little time to spare, clients say it works comfortably with their busy schedules. "It's 30 minutes I can fit in between going home and picking up the kids," said Jackie Smith, an Upper Marlboro resident. Then there's mental comfort to consider. No one is dressed like they belong on Baywatch. "You're not going to see Barbie Doll in here; you're not going to see anyone wearing a thong. A lot of people don't like the whole pick up scene at the gym," said Curves owner Julie Reynolds, 34. Sandra Weaver of Upper Marlboro agrees. "It's just women here and you don't feel as intimidated as with the men. We're all in the same boat," said Weaver. Each month, staffers at Curves help the women gauge their progress in inches lost instead of pounds, since muscle weighs more than fat. Smith has managed to shave a total of 19 inches. Weaver has also noticed results, shedding 8 inches and 4 pounds since joining in November.
